The Founder
Kalif Wilkes has spent twenty years inside music — not as an observer, but as a practitioner at the highest level. He began studying clarinet as a child in Mississippi, advancing quickly through the ranks until, at 18, he was ranked 3rd nationally as a clarinetist. That achievement didn't come from a school with abundant resources. It came from discipline, mentorship, and an environment that took his development seriously.
After that formative period, Wilkes went on to serve as a musician in the US Army National Guard — one of the most rigorous and structured musical training environments in the country. He completed his Nuvo WindStars instructor certification, giving him formal credentials in the specific instrument ecosystem A Place for Music is built around. And he continued his recording career, becoming a signed artist with Prosperity Music Collective.
But the credential that may matter most is the one that doesn't appear on a résumé: he is a former student of Christopher Little, founder of the Mississippi Music Institute. Mr. Little's commitment to the paideia — the holistic cultural and intellectual development of young people through performing arts — shaped how Wilkes thinks about what music education is actually for.
A Place for Music, Inc. is his answer to the question he kept asking: why should access to this kind of formation be limited to the few students who happen to find the right mentor or live in the right zip code?

Student of Christopher Little, founder of the Mississippi Music Institute
Our lineage
The Mississippi Music Institute, founded by Christopher Little, established a model for what music education as cultural formation can look like. It was more than instruction — it was a philosophical commitment to the idea that young people in Mississippi deserve to be shaped by the full weight of their artistic heritage.
A Place for Music is the next chapter in that lineage. It takes the same commitment and extends it into new terrain: mobile technology, ecological learning, and a model that doesn't require students to come to the program. The program comes to them.
Our mission
A Place for Music, Inc. is organized exclusively for charitable and educational purposes. Our mission is to design, implement, and operate state-of-the-art music education programs for youth in Mississippi — integrating STEAM curriculum with digital audio technology, eco-acoustic fieldwork, and early wind instrument literacy.
We are a nonprofit in formation, building toward full 501(c)(3) status. We are early-stage and intentional. We won't claim to have done more than we have — but we know exactly where we're going.
